Negative E-mails

The following are negative e-mails received through our web site showing the stigma, the discrimination, and the ignorance from some people in our society towards people with mental illnesses.

body: ...and if you apparently think you know so much about mental illness, it is apparent that you had know idea how to handle your own son. You're one of the people who call the police 20 times a month, let them bend over backward for you, then are the first one to complain when things don't go your way. Let me stab you in the face when a pen and see how you react.

body: If your son was so harmless, why did you call the police in the first place?

Next time, YOU get stabbed in the face and THEN call the police.

You are a bunch of cry-babies that want everyone to solve the monster that YOU didn't/couldn't handle.

You are an embarassment, as is this website.

body: You feel that the police were incorrect in holding your son at gunpoint after he stabbed another officer with a pen? Thats what he deserved, and you should be lucky your not planning a funeral right now. That officer acted very appropriately. Instead of blaming the police for doing their job, you should be blaming yourself and the medical establishment for not taking care of your son. It sounds like the lack of mental health runs in the family

body: I have a couple of questions for you. Very obviously you knew your son was mentally ill for quite some time according to your website postings. As his conservators, why then didn't you have him committed long before it got to the point it did? What would you have the police officer do when she has been assaulted, just back up and do nothing? Sorry, but it was too late at that point. It appears to me that at the time of the assault your son was out of control and had he had access to any other weapon he would have used it against the police. The fact that the officer drew his weapon was not actually deadly force, he never fired the weapon. What course of action would you have the officer take after she was assaulted? Just stand there and take it?

Your story is so slanted with emotion that its obviously distorted. Do you realize how much of the taxpayer's dollars it would cost to implement the remedies you propose? Why should the taxpayers of Minnesota pay to resolve problems that you should be financially responsible for? If I had your problem I wouldn't expect anyone else to pay for it. That's what is wrong with society in Minnesota today, and why our taxes are so high. Every liberal in the state expects somebody else to solve their crisis for them with somebody else's money.

With 2 sons myself I can imagine your concern, but why didn't you do something years ago as far as treatment for your son rather than wait so long until it became such a serious problem?

It appears to me that you wanted the police to solve the problem of your son's anti-social behavior and that isn't their job. Their job is to enforce the law and keep the peace. It isn't their job to ignore assaults and get injured by people like your son.

Why didn't you get help for your son long ago? It became a police matter when you called 911. It sounds to me like you dropped the ball for your son's care years ago and now you want the rest of society to solve the problem for you. Well, I'm sorry for your situation, but as a taxpayer I'm not responsible for your son's care and I don't think you should be blaming everyone else, the doctors, the police, the caseworkers, the pharmacists, etc. Get the picture? Stop blaming everyone else for your own shortcomings. Its yourselves you should be blaming for all this. You let your son's behavior get out of hand a long time ago and if you didn't want the police involved you shouldn't have called them. Stop trying to pass the blame on to everyone else.

body: That kid would be dead right now if I had been the officer....consider yourselves fortunate that you are not attending his funeral.

body: I can't believe this is on the Internet! I would have drawn my weapon in a heartbeat. If you don't want to see a gun in your sons face, don't let him assault a police officer. If you can't do that, take care of it your problems yourself.

Below is the result of your feedback form. It was submitted by (steakblisken@hotmail.com) on Tuesday, March 4, 2003 at 09:45:48

body: You are out of touch with reality. The reality is we live in a world with some very disgruntled and dangerous individuals. It sounds like your son is one of them. Let me get this straight. Your son goes out of control, for whatever reason, you can not deal with the situation. You call the Police, and your son in turn stabs one of them with a weapon. You get all huffy because a gun is rightfully pointed at him. Then try to make up mental excuses for your sons behavior. Then to top it off you complain about excessive force on the officers who you called their to deal with your mess!

Your son had every reason to be staring down the barrel of a gun. If he came at an individual with that pen in an aggressive manner, he would have every reason to be shot.

You people and amazing. Spend more time with your nut job son instead of harassing police that you place in harms way.

I cant wait for your reply to justify your actions.

body: You are doing a dis-service to yourself and are showing your ignorance. I would have shot your son if he tried to stab me with a pen so be glad I wasn't there. Before your so quick to rip on these officers you need to walk in their shoes and understand the threats they face everyday.

What a wast of my time reading this garbage.

body: What you guys don't wanna reply to what I had sent to you before. Is that because YOU ARE WRONG!! Your "mentally ill" son stabbed a Police Officer in the face and you complain cause they pulled out their guns? That does not make any sense. The cops were doing their job and making sure they make it home. Your claims are ludicrous. Just because the cops protected themselves they should be reprimanded or what?
